Please come and join us on Thursday morning, February 2, at 10:30, at St. John of the Cross in Lemon Grove to celebrate Candlemass (also known as Purification of the Blessed Virgin or Feast of the Presentation of Christ to the Temple). In obedience to Mosaic Law, which called for women to be purified after having given birth and to redeem their fist born, the Mother of God went to the temple of Jerusalem. There she was greeted by holy Simeon and Anna the prophetess. The child Jesus was hailed as the light to the revelation of the Gentiles. Thus we shall light candles to represent Christ, Light from Light, that dispels the darkness in our hearts.

John Polhamus and members of the Tomas Luis de Victoria Choir of San Diego rehearse polyphonic numbers in preparation for First Vespers of All Hallows, scheduled for Monday 31 October at 7.30pm at Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano, CA.

Polyphony will compliment the Gregorian chant, as sung by the Psalmists of the Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego along with Chorus Breviarii San Diego.

Vespers is the evening hour prayer of the Divine Office (a.k.a. Liturgy of the Hours). All Hallows Vespers will be followed by Exposition/Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, chanting of the Litany of Saints and the seasonal Marian Anthem.

A Package from the Mystic Monks!

...or, Carmelite Coffee from Wyoming. The editor of this blog recently heeded the encouragements of Fr. John Zuhlsdorf (of "What does the Prayer Really Say" blog-fame) and ordered two packages of Mystic Monk Coffee. This was done out of the necessity of preventing the dilatory effects of caffine withdrawal, as well as out of a desire to contribute something to a magnificent spiritual undertaking, that being the proposed Carmelite monastery which the friars are undertaking to build in the classic gothic style in the mountainous wilds of Wyoming. It is true that the coffee is a trifle more expensive that one might find in the store, yet its reputation is growing among conisseurs. I waited...waited upon the monks, with ever heightening anticipation. And then one day (Thursday, in fact)...

A package arrived. Pokey was there to meet it. "What could it be? And who do I know in Wyoming?" he thinks to himself.

Lots of paper to play with later is a good sign!

"No, no more paper," confirms Fumeé.

Indeed, far from any sense of critical qualification, much less disappointment, the "Hermit Bold" coffee is one of the mose delicious cups I've ever brewed. No, I think it really is the best! 100% Arabica coffee, roasted by the monks themselves, and I even used a tablespoon less than I normally use, this time three tablespoons for one Bodum cafetiere, when I usually use four. How do the friars get their coffee so rich, full and even? Well...it's a Mystery, which is just the way I...just the way WE like it!

Brother's October Mass for Bl. John Henry Newman, Confessor

The October Mass for the Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego was held on Saturday 9 October at St. Augustine's Monastery Chapel, in honor of Bl. John Henry Cardinal Newman. The mass was celebrated in the Extradordinary Form of the Roman Rite, the form solely familiar to Bl. Newman, and to which he dedicated so much love and care. Music provided by the assembled Brothers included the hymn "Lead Kindly Light," harmonized for four male voices; the propers of the mass were Os justi" taken from the Common of a Confessor not a Bishop; and the ordinary was Mass VI from the Gregorian kyriale. Following the Last Gospel, Fr. Harry Neely O.S.A. intoned the Salve Regina, as is customary at masses in England, and pronounced the collect. Lastly, Bl. Cardinal Newman's great hymn "Praise to the Holiest" comprised the recessional, sung to the tune by Sir Richard Runciman Terry, first director of the Westminster Cathedral Choir in London.

This was the Brothers' first "Newman Mass" celebrated following the venerabile's Beatification, held at Birmingham during the recent visit of the Holy Father to Britain. Recently shrines to Bl. Newman have been formally erected at the Birmingham, London, and Oxford Oratories. The Brothers hope to make some contribution to the cost of the shrine at London, through fundraising to be undertaken during the coming year.

Come and join us to celebrate the feast of this great saint and, arguably, the most influential thinker in Western thought. The Mass will be sung in Gregorian chant and it represents a unique opportunity to hear the sequence of St. Augustine, De profundis tenebrarum. Sequences are medieval liturgical hymns to be sung before the Gospel. They were almost completely eliminated after the Council of Trent (1545-1563) because, despite their undeniable orthodoxy, great beauty, and piety, their extra-biblical origin made them an easy target for the Protestant revolutionaries. Fr. Neely, our celebrant, is an Augustinian monk and enjoys the privilege of his order of using the ancient sequence on the feast day of their patron saint.

Assumption Vespers Report

Assumption Vespers were sung in the historic Serra Chapel of the Mission San Juan Capistrano on the evening of 14 August, 2010, before an enthusiastic congregation numbering some sixty to seventy. The Brothers of the Little Oratory were joined by members of Una Voce Orange County, making up the number of the liturgical choir to an impressive eighteen. Fr. Victor Sczurek, O.Praem., served as Hebdomadarius and performed the Benediction. Also in choir was Br. Aiden of the Canons Regular of the New Jerusalem. The Vespers were accompanied from the loft-organ, and the singing from both liturgical choir and congregation was at once tuneful and assertive throughout.

This occasion marked the second time that liturgical vespers have been sung before the beautiful gilt altar of the Serra Chapel, and it is hoped that another vespers occasion will be forthcoming in the near future. Afterwards a large impromptu gathering of the singers and congregants was held in a local restaurant, rounding out the beginning of Our Lady's great feast with splendid good-fellowship. Assumption Vespers and Benediction at Mission San Juan Capistrano

The Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego, in conjunction with members of Una Voce Orange County, will sing First Vespers of the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Serra Chapel of the Mission San Juan Capistrano, Saturday evening 14 August, 2010, at 7:30pm. The celebrant for the Vespers will be one of the Norbertine (O.Praem) fathers of St. Michael's Abbey. The traditional Vespers will be sung in Latin with organ accompaniment, and translational booklets will be available. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will follow immediately after the conclusion of Vespers.

A Visitor from London Presides at Vespers

On Sunday, 11 July 2010, the Brothers of the Little Oratory sang Vespers in St. Augustine's Monastery Chapel, with Fr. Christopher Basden as Hebdomadary. Father Basden has for the past fifteen years been pastor of St. Bede's parish, Clapham Park, which is a suburb of London, England, and part of the Archdiocese of Southwark. St. Bede's is a vibrant South London parish, which includes the Traditional mass in its Sunday morning schedule, as well as weekly Vespers, and a daily Extraordinary Form mass in the Lady Chapel. Fr. Basden came to the U.S. on his summer holiday, and made several stops on his tour, including the convent of the Handmaids of Mary at Camarillo, a group of Spanish nursing nuns who have a convent in St. Bede's parish. While there Fr. Basden was able to attend the solemn profession of one of the sisters.

Father then journeyed down from the Los Angeles area, stopping to see the missions at La Purissima, San Buenaventura, San Fernando Rey, San Gabriel, San Juan Capistrano, and San Louis Rey (though not all in one day!). While in San Diego he visited the mission San Diego de Alcala, and said mass at St. Augustine's and Our Lady of Refuge.

Fr. Basden devoted his last afternoon and evening to the Brothers, singing Vespers and Benediction at St. Augustine's, then retiring to Pacific Beach where he led shortened Oratorian "garden" exercises (as is the custom of the Brothers in summer), joined tbe Brother for tea, offered spiritual counsel in the form of an impromptu "fervorino", and later led traditional Gregorian compline in the house chapel.

Following his visit to San Diego, Fr. Basden has travelled on to spend a much needed week in retreat with the Benedictines of Clear Creek Monastery in Eastern Oklahoma. The Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego hope that his visit to San Diego will be one that Fr. Basden will not soon forget, and one which he will perhaps repeat without extensive delay.

The Brothers of the Little Oratory were pleased to celebrate their Eighth Annual tide of St. Philip Neri in St. Joseph's Cathedral, this past 4 & 5 June, 2010. The services included Solemn 1st Vespers of St. Philip sung Friday evening, the psalms and canticle of which were sung using the setting of W. A. Mozart, the "Solemn Vespers of a Confessor" K 3.39. This is believed to be the first recorded local use of Mozart's famous Vespers in their liturgical setting. The Thomas Luis de Victoria choir featured Mary Anne Carr-Wilson as soprano soloist, Dr. Alison Luedecke accompanied on the Cathedral's 1931 Austin pipe organ, and John Polhamus conducted. Audio clips will be made available shortly.

The following day at 2:00pm Solemn High Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman rite was sung in the Cathedral. Fr. Victor Sczurek, O.Praem. celebrated, assisted by Fr. Justin Ramos, O.Praem. as deacon, and Mr. James Crittenden, sub-deacon. The Brothers were indispensably assisted by one of their own in the role of MC, by Mr. Ashly Paver of Cincinnati, OH, who made the journey westward to once again join the chapter for the annual observances. The music for the mass was sung by a three-voice schola of the Victoria Choir, and included the Byrd "Mass for Three Voices" and the full Gregorian propers for the mass of St. Philip Neri.

This brings the activities of the Brothers into summer time, when weekly rehearsals will be suspended in favor of weekly semi-private vespers, and Brother's "Garden Exercizes." This spring has been an active one for the Brothers, and Brothers liturgical activities have included:

~ The 10th Consecutive Traditional Tenebrae, sung at St. John the Evangelist in University Heights, featuring choral contributions from the La Jolla Renaissance Singers. A promotional video featuring musical highlights of this year's particularly rich musical offerings is being prepared with the assistance of Mr. Steve Marshall, a graduate of John Paul the Great Catholic University. The video promises to offer some of the best representation to date of the Brother's liturgical activities

~ The 24th Anniversary of the monthly Rosary Procession at the University of San Diego's Immaculata Parish Church, featuring the Brothers processing in robes of the Archconfraternity of the Most Precious Blood;

~ Gregorian contributions to the 1st Communion Mass for St. Joseph's Academy in Vista. This mass featured the 1st communion of the daughter of postulant Jon T. Velasco. The Brothers sang on behalf of a capacity congregation at St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos, and were able to enhance the solemnity of the Ordinary Form mass for parents and communicants alike, offering many their first experience of liturgical chant. If actions follow initial reactions, we may hope to invited back next year, or even sooner. This was a fine example of the Brother's musico-liturgical apostolate in action.

~ The 1st Annual Brother's Rummage Sale.

~ The Eighth Annual Philiptide celebrations and Annual General Meeting of the Brothers. New officers were elected for proposal to the Father Prefect in London, and will be published upon approval.

~ And singing for the mass of Solemn Profession of Vows by Br. Ronald Custorio, O.S.A. at St. Augustine's Monastery Chapel. The Brothers sang Kyrie VI, and the Sanctus and Agnus of Mass VIII, along with Gregorian propers and a variety of Gregorian communion motets. At the generous barbecue buffet which followed, it was duly noted that the fine fare was provided by none other than "Phil's" Barbecue. The proprietor was duly provided with a Philiptide prayer-card, and introduced to the business' logical patron!

And with that, the Brothers come into the summer break, which gives us a chance to reflect on the exertions of the Fall and Spring, and to recharge our batteries for the coming season. We of course thank all those who have assisted us in our apostolate this past year, and hope that you will consider helping us again in the future. We offer prayers for all our benefactors, and request the same in return. We wish you a sun-burnished summer, leisure to enjoy it, the Blessings of our Lord and the intercessions of our Lady, St. Philip Neri, and all the saints. Summer is here: "Allegramente! The Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego sang their 10th consecutive annual Tenebrae on Wednesday evening, 31 March, 2010. The congregation numbered between fifty and seventy-five persons, with an additional twenty-five making up the La Jolla Renaissance Singers who generously contributed polyphony. Additionally, there were fifteen persons making up the liturgical choir and servers, bring the total attendance to over one hundred. The service lasted two and one-half hours. During each day of Lent, the Pope would address the faithful at a certain church and then lead them in procession to the station church, where he would celebrate Mass (St. Lawrence in Lucina, for the Friday after the 3rd Sunday of Lent). The collect (literally, gathering) was at St. Mary in Rutunda (better known as the Pantheon), and the name "collect" is still used today to indicate the prayer said by the priest at the beginning of Mass.

If you cannot walk through the streets of Rome on Friday, come to St. Augustine's monastery and hear the Traditional Latin Mass sung in Gregorian chant, in the quiet atmosphere of the chapel. Translational booklets will be provided.

St. Agnes was a thirteen-year-old Roman girl who was martyred in 304 A.D. under the emperor Diocletian. The name Agnes is Greek but in Latin it resembles agnus (lamb), hence the saint is always depicted with a lamb, beside the palm branch, which is the symbol of martyrdom. On her feast day, the Pope blesses two lambs from whose wool the pallium (vestment conferred to metropolitan archbishops) is woven.

The Mass will be entirely sung in Gregorian Chant. Everybody is welcome to attend. Donation will benefit St. Augustine's Monastery.

The Mass will be entirely sung in Gregorian Chant. St. Didacus (San Diego in Spanish) is the patron saint of America's Finest City. In November of 1602, Sebastián Vizcaíno was sent to map the California coast. Arriving on his flagship San Diego, Vizcaíno surveyed the harbor and what are now Mission Bay and Point Loma and named the area for St. Didacus.

All Hallows' Vespers at San Juan Capistrano, and the Distribution of Enrollment Cards

The Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego at the invitation of and in conjunction with members of Una Voce Orange County, sang the 1st Vespers of the Feast of All Hallows before the glittering reredos of the Serra Chapel at Mission San Juan Capistrano. A congregation of fifty persons, plus twelve in the sanctuary and five in the loft, brought the total in attendance to nearly seventy for the first traditional Roman vespers in at least the last forty years to be celebrated in the historic two hundred and forty year old chapel, the oldest original building remaining in all of the mission chain established by Blessed Junipero Serra.

The vespers were accompanied by a brother on the chapel's two manual pipe organ. In addition to the organ, violin descants, as well as flute and cello accompaniments were added to the processional and recessional hymns, as well as the hymns of Benediction, by the members of the Delina family, sisters Faith and Nicole, and their brother Gian. For this musical generosity the Brothers and doubtless all assembled return their sincere thanks. Fr. Victor Szczurek served as Hebdomadary and performed the Benediction, assisted in the sanctuary by MC Enzo Selvaggi.

In the sacristy following the services, enrollment cards for the Brothers' membership in the Archconfraternity of the Precious Blood were distributed, along with fresh and matching copies of the Brothers' cards of enrollment amongst the Brothers of the Little Oratory. This set was generously and exactingly prepared by Mr. James C.R. Cross of the London Brothers, and was prefaced by a formal message which was read prior to distribution. Accompanying the enrollment cards were copies of the St. Philip's Day 2009 cards distributed at London this past 26 May. Coming as it did following another successful annual observance of the vespers of one of the most glittering feasts of the church year, this touch of a London hand heightened the Brothers' sense of connection both to our living London family, and to the spiritual presence of our Saint, his sons, and our Brothers who have gone before us.

Between each church we will be saying the Rosary, singing hymns, and praying joyfully in the manner of St. Philip Neri, who started this practice in Rome nearly 500 years ago. During the first part of the walk, Fr. Federico Masutti, F.S.S.P. will accompany us and hear confessions.

The Mass "In virtute" for the Feast of St. Wenceslaus was sung on Monday evening, 28 September in St. Augustine's Monastery Chapel, with approximately 25 persons attending. Fr. Harry Neely O.S.A. celebrated the mass in the Extraordinary Form, and a choir of Brothers of the LIttle Oratory in San Diego provided the chant propers and ordinary. Fr. Federico Masutti F.S.S.P. graciously loaned his personal red vestment set, an antique set made in Argentina.

The Brothers posess both a white and a black set of Roman Vestments, but are in need of green, violet, rose and gold sets. Last Sunday, 20 September, the Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego sang Vespers at St. Augustine's Monastery Chapel. Fr. Harry Neely, O.S.A., whom we thank for his hospitality and willingness to lead us in prayer, served as Hebdomadary. Thanks also to Fr. Federico Masutti, F.S.S.P., who after Vespers celebrated Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. These were the first Vespers sung in the company of our brother Ronald Clemente after many months of separation. Ron has recently returned to San Diego after a tour of duty in Afghanistan with the Army Reserve. We are grateful to God and St. Philip for protecting Ron and returning him safely to us. Laus Deo!

Brothers sing Assumption Vespers at St. Augustine's Monastery

First Vespers of the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary were sung at St. Augustine's Friday evening, 14 August, 2009. Although the Vespers were hardly announced except through Facebook, and were in fact semi-private, a number of public congregants attended, including two of the Augustinian Fathers in residence at St. Augustine's.

Fr. Federico Masutti, F.S.S.P. served as Hebdomadary, making his first association with the Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego and Chorus Breviarii. It is hoped that this will be the first of many.

Six Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego were present in choir, including George Pecoraro, Richard Dawes, Roberto Lionello, David Latorre, Thomas Gray, and John Polhamus, who provided organ accompaniment for the service. Along with these were three Chorus Breviarii members, Jon T. Velasco, Andrew Morales, and James Covalt, who served as MC for the first time.

The Brothers and members of Chorus Breviarii wish all a Happy Feast of Our Lady's Assumption. Ora pro nobis, Sancta Dei Genetrix, ut digni efficiamur promisionibus Christi.

A New Oratorian Beato!

It's been a busy year for John Henry Cardinal Newman! It is no accident that a society bearing his name led the opposition to the giving of an honorary Doctorate of Law to Barack Obama a little over a month ago, in strong defense of the integrity of Catholic doctrine and its social application. Had he been alive in the flesh he could not have been more present. Then three days ago, on 3 July 2009, his first miracle approved by a board of cardinal theological consultors, Pope Benedict XVI signed the decree which cleared the way for the beatification of perhaps the most famous, and most Catholic convert to our faith in modern times.

Birmingham, England (city of the cardinal's own Oratorian congregation) has been mentioned as a possible site for the beatification, although Westminster Cathedral might be the most desirable option, as this is a beato for all England, for all the English speaking world, and for all the world in general. The great London Byzantine cathedral has a new Cardinal, H.E. Vincent Nichols, and a new, more orthodox direction: a new English beato would be the crowning glory, and the liturgy would afford a platform for projecting all three.

Is it likewise any accident that this particular saint, one of the most intellectually incisive of this or any other age, probably more prolific and philosophically influential than any recent prelate outside the late pontiff John Paul II, has had his beatification delayed for so long, until just now? Looking at the contemporary assault on the church being waged by the forces of relativism and secularism, and the burgeoning trend not of resistance, but of re-conversion within the church itself by a younger generation of hierarchs seeking the implementation of the hermeneutic of continuity, can there be any doubt as to why the Almighty has waited until now to prove his saint's intercessory efficaciousness?

Cardinal Newman is so much more than the benign "advocate for the cause of students" that the frequently banal "Newman Centers" of American secular universities make him out to be. In fact, Cardinal Newman was an advocate of specifically Catholic education and therefore Catholic students, and held forthright and unwavering convictions regarding the integrity and undeniability of Roman Catholic doctrine, and of the inevitability of conversion as a result of their rational logic. To paint him as oecumenical in the modern sense is no longer an option. This is a Roman Catholic beato to the core.

Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman's voice is poised to echo ever louder in the face of this contemporary assault. And even though Our Lord and His vicar may save canonization for another crisis and another needful generation, the Cardinal's Oratorian sons and brothers rejoice at his renewed presence among their congregations, and in the church at large.

Soon to be Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, intercede for us, for Our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI, and for the Congregations of the Oratory.

The Precious Blood Robes: And Then there were Two!

The Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego are now possessed of a pair of Precious Blood Robes, the robes worn by the Brothers at London, who are also members of the Archconfaternity of the Precious Blood. The robes are worn by the Brothers when participating in liturgical processions, or with cotta when assisting at the altar on appropriate feasts, such as the Feast of the Precious Blood (July 1), or when participating in Musical Oratory.

The robes are here modelled by Brother Richard Dawes, and Chorus Breviarii member and Postulant, John T. Velasco. The second robe was made by La Mesa Tailors of Linda Vista, San Diego, Ca., to a pattern by Mrs. Nunzia Pecoraro, wife of George Pecoraro, one of the Brothers. Mrs Pecoraro is a professional costumier, who works for San Diego Opera and the Old Globe Theatre, among others. The Brothers wish to express to Mrs Pecoraro and to La Mesa Tailoring their sincere gratitude for work expertly undertaken, and expertly completed. (Spot the replica!)

This detail shows the perfectly matched piping, buttons, and the red stitching around the button holes, all evidence of the attention to detail paid to the exact reproduction of the Precious Blood Robe copy (and yes, for those who know, the curious little button at the top of the back, under both the collar and mantle, is duly in place!). A keen eye will notice however, a slight difference in the weave of the two black fabrics. The original robe (right) is wool, which after experimentation proved too hot even for the sub-tropical climate of San Diego. Instead, a double thickness of cotton fabric was used, which achieves a weight and hang similar to the woolens, but provides suitable breathability.

The achievement of the first Precious Blood Robe (in all probability) to be manufactured on this continent in the last hundred years, if ever, is due to the extraordinary generosity of the London Brothers who made it possible, through the donation of one of their own, for yet another level of completeness in the expression of the Oratorian life of our distant chapter to be realized. We are not only grateful, but indebted, and if unable to repay the debt in attendance or material contribution, we will ever seek to do so through spiritual affection and prayerful devotion. Brothers, we thank you.

St. Philip's Celebrations 2009

The 2009 observance of St. Philip's Feast was accomplished with the greatest degree of fullness yet attained by the Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego. With the exception of Ronald Clemente, currently serving with the United States Army Reserve in Afghanistan, all of the admitted Brothers forming the "Western Chapter" of the Brothers of the Little Oratory at London were present in San Diego for this year's celebrations.

These include Mssr's Ashley Paver (Cincinnati, OH), John Polhamus, Roberto Lionello, Thomas Gray, David Latorre, Richard Dawes, John J. Velasco, Christopher Velasco, George Pecoraro, Robert Keim (Maple Hill, KS) and Wayne Lam (Orange County, CA). They were joined in choir by Mssr's Jon T. Velasco, James Covalt and Jeffrey Morse (Sacramento, CA), currently postulants.

Parcipating clergy included Fr. Carl Gismondi, FSSP, Deacon Jose Zepeda, FSSP, and Fr. Justin Ramos, O. Praem., who very graciously travelled all the way from St Michael's Abbey in Silverado for Vespers and Holy Mass, thus ensuring solemn liturgies on both occasions. To him, and to Fr. Gismondi and Deacon Zepeda, the Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego offer their most profound, solemn and joyful gratitude.

On Sunday 24 May the Musical Oratory was given in St. Joseph's Cathedral in downtown San Diego, with a musical offering by Dr. Alison Leudecke, playing the 1931 Austin organ, which was originally installed in the old cathedral-church, demolished in 1942 to make way for the present building. Dr. Leudecke's program included music by the early 20th century titular organists of the great Parisian churches and Cathedrals. For her time, her talent and the treasure of her generosity, the Brothers thank Dr. Luedecke profoundly. The Brothers also wish to thank the Cathedral Rector and Pastor of St. Joseph's, Fr. Peter Escalante, for once again allowing us to praise God in the historic seat or our Diocese.

Dr. Luedecke's program included the Th. Dubois "Toccata in G Major," the "Te Deum of Tournemire," the "Ave Maria: Ave maris Stella" of Langlais, "Incantation pour un jour saint" by Langlais, "Nigra sum" from the Dupre Vespers of the Blessed Virgin, the "Veni Creator Spiritus" of Durufle, and for the recessional the "Final" of the Vierne Organ Sym #1. Apart from the first and last pieces, each of the pieces during the musical offering was preceded by a brief selection of chants sung by the assembled Brothers, each illustrating and quoting the main themes used as motives in the organ pieces. Hymns included "This is the Saint", "True Sons of Philip", and in the middle, a hymn written by An Oratorian Brother of three stanzas on the theme of conversion, sung in a metricized version to the famous and familiar chorale-theme from the Saint-Saens "Organ" Symphony #3.

The Musical Oratory was held to the rear of the crossing aisle of the Cathedral, and necessitated only the moving of an armed chair and a small side-table, and a kneeler for Fr. Gismondi. About forty attended the concert, minus the Brothers - but bear in mind that this was the Memorial Day weekend. Next Year St. Philip's day precedes it by a week, so in some ways this year might be looked on as a tune up for a more propitious calendrical placement. We hope to transcribe Fr. Gismondi's fervorino from one of the video-tapes in the near future.

Also of interest was that during the Musical Oratory, Robert Keim read from the life of St. Philip by Bacci, wearing the Precious Blood robe, as is customary apparel for Brothers at Musical Oratory. This robe is the customary habit of the Archconfraternity of the Precious Blood, and is used for public or ceremonial wear outside of liturgical function in the sanctuary. The Brothers upon reception at London, are enrolled in the Archconfraternity, which was brought to England by Fr. Frederick William Faber, founder of the London Oratory. This use marked the robe's first appearance in San Diego. More are currenty being made for the use of the San Diego Brothers.

On Monday, 1st Vespers of St. Philip Neri were sung in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Coronado, Ca., across the bay from downtown San Diego. The use of this architecturally noteworthy church was graciously granted by Pastor Michael Murphy, and use was overseen (on Memorial Day holiday) by parish Organist Holly Jones, who also contributed a festive prelude and postlude. To both of them and all who helped facilitate the Vespers, the Brothers extend their heartfelt gratitude.

Fr. Gismondi was Hebdomadary, with Fr. Justin Ramos, O.Praem. 1st Asst, and Deacon Zepeda FSSP 2nd. Psalmody was carried off well, accompanied by Mr. Spencer Velkey, to whom the Brothers offer great thanks. The office hymn "Pangamus Nerio" was sung to the tune written in 1895 by William Sewell, arranged for SATB choir, String Quartet, and Organ. At exposition the choir sang the Croce "O sacrum convivium", and the sopranos sang an original Tantum Ergo by An Oratorian Brother, accompanied by the string quartet. Following the procession to the Lady Altar the choir sang the Soriano "Regina Caeli", and the hymn "True Sons of Philip."

This year's vespers were Solemn three-cope vespers, with three matching gold copes borrowed from St. Anne's Parish, Santa Sophia Parish, and Fr. Justin Ramos personally. For their great generosity and trust the Brothers thank particularly Fr. Gismondi, Fr. Peter McGuine, Pastor of Santa Sophia Parish, and Fr. Ramos. The three copes are approximately one hundred years old, being made of Cloth of Gold manufactured in Lyons, France. The panels on the copes are machine stitched, but hand-tinted, creating stitching of great accuracy, yet shading of amazing subtlety. To view them in use is itself a prayer.

As previously stated, on St. Philip's Day there were no fewer than eleven of the twelve San Diego Brothers in attendance, Christopher Velasco particularly managing to come down from Long Beach prior to his college Graduation the next day. He served as a torchbearer at communion. Combined with Jeffrey Morse, Jon T. Velasco and James Covalt, there were fourteen Brothers and postulants involved in the ceremonies (two of them in the choir-loft).

The Brothers served the Solemn High Mass beautifully, which was well attended, and the music went off with great beauty and dignity. The ordinary was the Hassler Missa "Dixit Maria", with the Verdonck Ave Maria at offertory and the Croce "O sacrum convivium" at Communion. A quartet of men sang the chant propers. Afterwards five of the Brothers took the Father and Deacon to a local steak-restaurant (which just happens to have a 1610 carved interior of English oak) for a festive "thank you" dinner.

Believe it or not, that is only a brief sketch outline of the activities to do with this year's Philiptide in San Diego. Were the writer to elaborate this entry would be many times as long. In fact, having made St. Philip's Novena leading up to the feast, and considering the number of new venues, and strands of good will upon which it was necessary to pull in order to draw these various elements together, elements musical, material, and clerical, the true results of this year's efforts were the miraculous granting of wish after wish, desire after desire; request after request. More than once we abandoned ourselves to the disposition of the Lord and the intercession of our Saint, and each time everything came together just as we had prayed it would. Literally, nothing went wrong; well, except that the recorder failed to capture the choir's fine performance at the Mass, which is in fact nothing more than a warranted mortification of the writer's pride!

No, if I may speak personally, the visible change eminating from this Philiptide seems to be only that I have added a seventh holy-card to the lower edge of my framed Guadalupe in what I call my "Lady Chapel". Really, that's about the total extent of the tangible, observable results of all of the aforementioned, except a few left-over programmes. But when I look at that little card (itself typeset by a Brother literally half-way around the globe), it means more to me than all the gold vestments in the world. And the best part is, after all the effort, expense, and sleep deprivation it took to bring these 2009 celebrations to reality, I know I'm not the only one that feels that way.

9th consecutive Annual Tenebrae Service sung at St. John's

The Brothers of the Little Oratory, and members of Chorus Breviarii Gregorian Chant Schola, sang their 9th consecutive Annual Tenebrae service on Wednesday evening of Holy Week, in the church of St. John the Evangelist, Normal Heights, San Diego.

Fr. Harry Neely, O.S.A. served as Hebdomadary and sang the 1st lesson from the Lamentations of Jeremias.

The Brothers and CB members numbered ten in choir, and around thirty members of the public attended.

Numbers were down this year owing to the fact that advertising of this service was conducted strictly via the internet, for the first time.

The service ran to two hours fifteen minutes exactly.

The Faithful of the Diocese of San Diego are invited to attend the celebration of Evening Prayer (Vespers) for Lent followed by a Reception for Bishop Cordileone on Sunday, March 29th at 4:00 p.m. at Mission San Diego de Alcalá, St. Francis Center."

Please mark this appointment in your datebooks. This is a splendid opportunity to both thank Bishop Cordileone in person for his service to his native Diocese, and to send him on to his new one with our heartfelt prayers.

The Brothers salute the new Bishop of Oakland, Bishop Salvatore Cordileone

"VATICAN CITY, 23 MAR 2009 (VIS) - The Holy Father appointed Bishop Salvatore Cordileone, auxiliary of San Diego, U.S.A., as bishop of Oakland (area 3,798, population 2,466,692, Catholics 406,947, priests 433, permanent deacons 112, religious 843), U.S.A."

This morning the news that was not entirely unexpected became public. Bishop Cordileone is to leave us. The Brothers of the Little Oratory in San Diego offer their dear Bishop their unceasing prayers and good wishes, and their heartfelt thanks for the many opportunities he gave us to exercise our spiritualities through liturgical work at levels we never expected to attain. However long it may be before we see him again, if we are so blessed, the memories, the experiences we shared with him, and the expanded spiritual horizons he inculcated in us, will both sustain and propel us towards a holier future. God Bless you, Bishop.

Speaking personally, it has been a great grace to know and serve this extraordinary man, indeed the greatest grace I have know in this diocese through the years. He has helped so many to recover, nurture and find growth in Catholic identities long undernourished. His manifold kindnesses and sensitivities, combined with a firm and assertive guidance has changed the lives of so many in our Diocese it would be difficult to count them.

Of his many extraordinary personal qualities, let me highlight but a few: he is accessible. He laughs. He is intellectual. He has a rare common touch. He is interested. He listens. He has no liturgical axe to grind; his concern is always for the quality of the liturgical act. He knows his own mind, but is concerned with the perceptions of others as well. He loves his ministry. He truly loves the Roman Catholic Church. I could go on, but I will leave it to his future biographers.

Without him we will be bereft for a time, but we will go on. May he go from strength to strength. May the hand of the Almighty rest firmly upon him. May he visit us one day in Eminence. May his rise continue, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to the benefit of all. "Virgam virtútis tuæ emíttet Dóminus ex Sion: domináre in médio inimicórum tuórum" : The Lord shall send the rod of thy power out of Sion : be thou ruler, even in the midst among thine enemies...and in the midst of your countless friends, as well.
