Vespers for All the Faithful Departed
During Hallowtide (Nov. 1-8), the Catholic faithful are able to gain plenary indulgences for the souls in Purgatory by praying for their repose in a cemetery. Chorus Breviarii will be praying Vespers of the Dead at Pioneer Park, formerly known as Calvary Cemetery, the successor cemetery to the Campo Santo in Old Town and the direct predecessor to Holy Cross. While many signs of the cemetery's existence are long gone, the restored headstones of numerous San Diego figures buried here remain, including both Mexicans and Americans, as well as foreign-born priests who ministered to the Irish, Mexican, and Mission Indian communities. The bodies of these poor souls were never moved, so there are hundreds of people still buried underneath this city park. Come and pray with us for the repose of these souls.
